Inputs of material which alter the nature of sea water can come from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Heat, for example, is added to coastal waters by volcanic eruption as well as industrial discharges. Such inputs are considered pollution when they degrade the quality of the water enough to cause a negative impact on organism or to create an aesthetically displeasing environment.

Sources of pollution :

 oxygen-demanding waste

 oil-related wastes

 conservative wastes

 solid wastes

 heat

 radioactivity

   sediment
