The Basics

by Kyle

All calculators have several basic functions including addition, subtraction, multiplcation, and division. This section will discuss how to perform these simple functions. The TI-83 has an advantage over non-graphing calclulators in that the previous answer and problem are still present on the screen. This lets users do problems in steps without fear of forgetting the last answer. It also takes the guesswork out of putting a problem into the unit. You can see it.

Lets say the user needs to do the math problem:

1 + 4 = ?

The first thing you would need to do is to make sure that your calculator is on. Do this by observing the screen. If there is a flashing box or any symbols on the screen then it is on, if not press the button on the bottom, left of the front of the calculator once to turn it on. Now press the 1 key, the the + symbol then the 4 key. This set of keys entered the problem into the unit. Now to get the answer press [ENTER]. The answer to the problem will be displayed on the next line of the screen on the far right.

Now lets make it a little harder. Lets do the problem:

-1 + 4 = ?

Now that we have added a negative sign the problem really isn't any harder. It justs takes more keystrokes to complete. The only thing that the user needs to do differently is to depress the negative symbol (-) when appropriate. So for this problem the user would need to insert the negative symbol before the 1.

For other operations just follow the same instructions only replacing the addition symbol with the operation needed for the problem. The user can add as many numbers and operation to the problem as he wishes just by pressing the button on the calculator.
