MORPHINE

What Is Morphine?

Morphine is a drug isolated and developed out of opium by the German pharmacist Serturner in 1805. He named it "morphine" after Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams.

Morphine has long been the standard or measure in thc relief of severe pain. Since the late 1930's, however, synthetic: (demerole, methadone, oxycodone) have become working medical substitutes to morphine.

The drug of choice for relief of pain, it takes only uccond place to heroin as a drug of abuse. It is widely used by addicts, particularly when heroin is difficult to obtam. Euphoria (sense of wellbeing) can be produced with small doses, but a warning: tolerance builds rapidly.
