What are sedatives

Sedatives are a big family of drugs which relax the nervous system. They calm the nerves, reduce tension, and induce sleep. The best known are: the barbiturates, first produced in 1846 from barbituric acid.

There are some 2,500 in the sedative family. Only about 30 are widely used medically.

The sedatives are also known as: "goofballs", "sleeping pills", "downs", "downers", "sleepers" and "slumbers".
