Atlantis is supposed to be a very advanced civilisation which existed 900 years ago. It is said to have sunk into the ocean during an earthquake. The first account of this island are in Timaeus and Critias, two dialogues by Plato.
More than 9000 years before the birth of Christ, all North Africa west to Egypt and Europe from Spain to northern Italy, was under Atlantis power. The citizens were descendants of the sea-god Poseidon. The island took its name from the giant Atlas, one of Poseidon's sons. It prospered for many millennia.
It is not known whether Atlantis is just a myth or not, but many experts believe that Minoan Island of Thera is actually Atlantis. This island is in Agaen Sea, which is very near Plato's Greece. Also, Minaon was very advanced as well and had been destroyed by the eruption of Thera. The tidal waves resulting could have drowned most of the inhabitants and the volcanic ash and dust would have deposited and ruined harvest for years.
Another belief is that the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean are actaully the tops of the mountains of Atlantis. Underwater structures have also been found in the Caribbean Sea.
Some people believe that aliens are the reason why Atlantis technology was so advanced. Others believe that Atlanteans were extraterrestrials and had destroyed themselves with atomic bombs.
