Brief Description:
Lithium is the first real alkali metal. A highly reactive metal (it wants to lose its extra electron), it oxidizes in air to become Li2O and reacts vigorously with water, producing lithium dioxide and hydrogen gas. Lithium is soft enough to cut with a knife and requires storage in oil to preserve it from oxidation. Among its main uses are as a treatment for depression and generating hydrogen gas.
