Redox Reactions involve the transfer of electrons between atoms or molecules and the effect of electricity on chemistry. Also known as oxidation-reduction reactions, this important area of chemistry has many practical applications, including the prevention of metal corrosion, the manufacture of powerful and long-lasting batteries, isolation of valuable dissolved minerals, and the possibility of new, environmentally-friendly sources of power. Before we begin, be sure you are familiar with the oxidation states concept introduced in the "Atoms and Molecules" chapter.
