In 1988, Hepburn became a special ambassador  to the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) and spent the last years of her life working for needy children, especially in Adrica and Latin America. She was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award after succumbing to colon cancer.

She was an icon to style, elegance, dignity and charity. Hepburn was married to Mel Ferrer (1954-1968). In 1969, she married Italian psychologist Dr Andrea Mario Dotti.
