Disadvantages of Veganism

There are no good reasons to not become a vegan, but like any lifestyle there are a few disadvantages. Commitment, the cost, and finding the right foods are the few problems of a strict vegan diet.

Commitment can especially become a problem when making the switch to veganism. At first you have to daily remind yourself what you eat and don’t eat. It is sometimes easier to switch to vegetarianism and then gradually start eliminating diary and egg products. Making that switch to veganism is always a good idea, but it can be hard and cause people to give it up completely, going back to their previous diets.

The cost factor is an important issue to consider when deciding on veganism. Food will end up costing you more. For example a loaf of bread in a natural food store or the health department in a supermarket will cost you anywhere from $3.00 to $5.00 or more, however most of the cost depends on what you buy and where. Although veganism will cost you a little more it will save you money in the long run. Medical bills are very expensive and being vegan will help you avoid many health problems such as heart disease and cancer.

The greatest challenge of all is finding the right food. Eating out can be a problem, though definitely not impossible. Many restaurants will honor a request for vegan food. However make sure they know what vegan food is and that you want your order without meat, diary, and eggs. Generally you can always find something at a parties that is vegan, or you always have the option to bring your own food. Going grocery shopping can be hard at times too. Natural Food stores and super markets that have a good health-food section are definitely the best places to purchase vegan food. Although these places are rare, they are becoming more common. The main secret for shopping is to read the ingredient label on everything that you buy. Doing this you can safely shop just about anywhere.

With these few problems, many people have given up on veganism. However there are solutions and these minor inconveniences should not turn you away from the great advantages veganism has to offer.
