| Upon the
basis of recent technological advances, there has
been discovered five periods in the Mayan history:
Period Lítico: (10000-3000 AC) The Mayans were hunter-gatherers. They made simple tools like mortars and pestles, and scrapers, and appliances which looked like plants and animals. Archaic period: (3000-1800 AC) The food which the Mayans harvested increased and they manufactured stone implements in the form of knives, axes and grinders of hand. Pre-Classic Period: (1800AC-200DC) Ceramics are used for first time. Classical period: (200-1000DC) An epoch of large advances, marked by the appearances of marvellous stelae recounting its events and images carved instones. Post-Classic Period: (1000-1450DC) During this time there was inter-regional "emigration" of architecture and art. Spears are created as weapons of war.The ancient Mayan buildings were magnificent and very advanced, and they used mainly caliza, a type of rock, for its sculptures, because it was abundant and it was found throughout Mayan lands. These sculptures have helped scientists greatly in studying Mayan culture, and they verify the infinite number of monuments that are still lost. They were also great artists, and they showed it in their painted ceramics and their ancient manuscripts. By looking at their beautiful vases and the brilliant execution of the Códice of Dresde, one can see that the Mayas were the greatest painters of Pre-Colombian America. Another pride of the Mayas was their pottery, polychrome cups and vases showing off their truly amazing ability in aesthetics, combining in truly majestic form the colours and the forms of the objects. The Mayas knew how to work to perfection the stone called jade, which is almost always of dark green colour although also in other shades. The fact that they lacked metallic instruments for carving makes their skill in working this extremely hard stone quite incredible. They were also excellent architects and engineers, and proof of it can be seen in the large buildings, palaces, temples and pyramids.
