At the present time it comprises the Park Nacional Tikal, first of this type existing in Central America, that has a surface of 576 kilometers square.Tikal is distinguished mainly by its monumental temples, of up to 70 meters in height. The doors of these temples were carved in wood, and constitute the most beautiful works of wooden carvings known. In 1980 a group of Guatemalan archaeologists made the most important finding of the modern times, THE LOST WORLD OF TIKAL. Located about 200 meters away from the central seat, it is part of the same ancient Tikal that was protected by the walls of the city. The wonders of the Lost World of Tikal, that had kept its secret for 2000 years, are a series of buildings that contain in their interior thrones and sculptures of extraordinary value. Another extraordinary feature of the Lost World is the Great Pyramid, that measures 50 meters in height.
