PRESSURES AND DENSITIES

Pressure = Force / Area

Specific Gravity - number of times a substance is a heavy as an equal body of water.

Specific Gravity (liquid) = Weight of Liquid / Weight of Equal Volume of Water

Density = Mass / Volume

Pressure = depth x density, or force per unit area. An increase in pressure is transmitted equally through the liquid.

Specific Gravity (solid) = Weight of Body / Weight of Equal Volume of Water

                     **OR**       Weight of Body / Loss of Weight in Water

One cubic yard of air = approx. 2 lbs.

Atmospheric pressure at sea level = approx. 15 lbs / inch
