SEPARATING MIXTURES [Continuing...]

Chromatography: This is a technique is used to detect parts of a mixture by separating its ingredients. The most common form is paper chromatography. This involves placing a drop of a mixture to be separated on a type of blotting paper called chromatography paper which is then dipped into a solvent. As the solvent soaks up through the paper it carries the mixture with it. As different substances dissolve at different rates the solvent carries some parts of the mixture further than others, thus separating them. For example, you can see the number of different colored dyes in ink food coloring. It is also used in forensic sciences.
