MIXTURES

Mixture: a substance which contains elements and/or compounds physically

mixed together. There is no chemical reaction in the process.

Heterogeneous Mixture - this is a mixture that contains ingredients of different

states of matter. For example, iced tea contains ice

                                         (solid) and the tea (liquid).

Homogenous Mixture - this type of mixture contains ingredients of the same

state of matter. For example, coffee contains a liquid

                                      only.

Homogenous Mixtures are usually Solutions.

A Solution is made up of a Solute (what is being dissolved), and a Solvent (the ingredient that does the dissolving).

Rule of Thumb! The solvent dissolves the solute.

Usually, the solute is the lesser amount; the solvent is the greater amount.

Also know that the Universal Solvent is Water (as a result of polarity within the hydrogen bonding).
