Glossary

Electrolysis: The passage of a strong electric current through a molten ionic compound sometimes can decompose the compound into its elements.

Electron: A negatively charged particle that surrounds the atom.

Electron Shell: The atom's "boundary." The shell facilitates the electrons that move around in it.

Element: A substance composed of atoms with identical atomic numbers.

Evaporation: The process by which a liquid turns into a gas. This only takes place at the surface of liquids, as opposed to boiling that takes place throughout the liquid.

Filtration: A separating process in which a mixture of liquid and solid is separated by trapping one of the states, usually the solid using filter paper, for example.

Formality: The number of formula weights of solute per liter of solution.

Ion: A particle obtained by adding or removing electrons from atoms or molecules.
