ATOMS, MOLECULES & IONS [Continuing...]

The Ion

This particle carries an electrical charge, which may be positive or negative. Each Ion has a name and a formula. Ions can be derived from single atoms or from combinations. The charge on the ion is shown as a number above the symbols. The size of the charge indicated as a number, for example 1+, 2+, 3+, 1-, 2-, or 3-. It is important to note, however, that not all combination of atoms produce molecules and ions.

The Process:

Atoms have electron shells that 'want' to be full of electrons. Ions are produced when atoms either give away these electrons or when they gain electrons. Depending on what happens, they attain their particular charge. Atoms that gain electrons gain a negative charge because electrons have a negative charge; atoms that give away electrons gain a positive charge because there is an extra proton.
