American Colonial Architecture was adapted from many other types of architecture.  The people that settled in America were from all over the world each bringing along their own style of architecture.  Also they had to adapt from their style of architecture to the different weather conditions in their new home.  Not to mention the available supplies and the generally poor settlers.  Thus they developed a style all their own.
