The Ancient Era covers three famous civilizations, the Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Romans. In the Egyptian civilization, as we are sure you have seen, they built pyramids, but they also built statues and temples.  To build such structures required a great deal of skill in architecture and engineering.  They also had to have a large work force in order to construct their enormous structures, however they only had primitive tools to work with.

The Greek peninsula was first settled by Neolithic people, they built built one room houses, which were mostly square.  Next on the peninsula were the Minoans, they built houses with many rooms, however the rooms were separated by only columns.  What your probably think about when you picture Greek architecture is what we call Classic Greek Architecture.  Classic Greek Architecture is made up of three orders, Corinthian, Doric, and Ionic.  The Corinthian was the more elaborate of the three and for that reason was not used often.  The Doric were simpler, this type of architecture was made by the Spartans .  The Ionic were larger and more elaborate, with sculptures and carvings on the pillars.

The architecture of Ancient Rome was similar to that of the Classic Greek Style.  However the Romans developed unique styles of their own using the arch, the vault, and the dome.
