Mayan decay and disappearance
It is very possible that they enentually faded as an empire for the same reasons as the Aztecs. After Spanish invasion the Aztec were separated from their beliefs and old world culture and forced by the Spaniards to do what they wanted. Eventually the interbreeding of the two culures led to a new race known as the Mexicans. In the case of the Mayans, however it didn't quite go down that way. It is reasonable to presume that the Mayans refused to let the Spaniards just take over and/or interbreed or intermix their will upon them. This led to a large dispersement of the culture and the peoples.
