originated in Russia during the 1930's, initailly as a method
of crowd control used by police and soldiers. Sambo was officially
adopted as a seperate sport in the Soviet Union on June 9, 1938.
The following year, the first sambo championships in the U.S.S.R.
In 1968, it was adopted as wrestling's third discipline by the
International Amateur Wrestling Federation. Sambo began in the
U.S. as a committee of the Wrestling Division of the Amateur
Athletics Union. The First National AAU Senior Men's Sambo Championships
were held in Pheonix, Arizona in 1975.
