NOTE: This will work as the electrical sensor that is required in the other experiments.

1 yard of insulated wire
1 compass (a used, replaceable one, not the one that your great grandfather gave you. During the experiment, the compass poles may be reversed, rendering the compass useless.)
1 AA battery
|
|
|
|
Wrap the wire around the compass leaving about 3 inch leads on each end. The wire should not cover the entire compass face. If it does, then use less wire.
|
|
|
|
Align the compass so that the needle is perpendicular to the wire.
|
|
|
|
Attach the wires to the positive and negative ends of the battery. Leave them attached for 3 seconds, and then remove them.
|
|
|
|
Notice the movement of the needle when the battery is applied. This is the sign that electricity is running through the wire.
