Distribution of Ebola Virus

Ebola Virus was discovered in 1976 in Africa and was named after a river in Zaire where the virus originated.

There have only been three main reported outbreaks around the world. The first two were in Zaire and Sudan in 1976. There was more than 600 cases and more than 340 deaths reported. The third happened in Sudan in 1976 at a lower intensity of 34 cases and 22 deaths. The Ebola virus is not common, especially in countries with good medical supplies and policies. The cause of these outbreaks was due to the reuse of needles.

The distribution is mainly in Central Africa and does not appear to spread much further. The countries where the Ebola virus is active are Zaire, Sudan, Gabon, Nigeria, Liberia, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Kenya. The virus has been located in some places in Europe, Asia, and even Texas.
