Bayard Rusty was a civil rights leader who was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was the founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and deputy director of the 1963. March on Washington. Rustin went to Air force University in Ohio and Cheney State College in Pennsylvania. He was imprisoned as a conscientious objector and served two-and- a-half years behind bars. When he was released, Rustin went on to organize and get involved in events and opportunities to help bring equality. In 1965, he began to work with Martin Luther King Jr., first on the Montgomery Bus Boycott and then in helping conceive and draw up plans for the SCLC. Until his death in 1987, Rustin Bayard help organized and affiliate himself as a civil rights demonstrator.
