Energy of the river is used for lateral erosion and also for transportation of the river load down the river. As the gradient is smaller than the upstream portion, there is a reduce in the downward cutting of the sides. Hence, vertical erosion is less common and valley sides are not as steep. Deposition occurs as there are meanders and materials are deposited on the convex bank.
