A river can be divided into 3 main parts with certain distinct landforms. The 3 main parts are the upstream portion, the portion between the upstream and down stream portion and the down stream portion.
- Small and narrow
- Rough and shallow
- Volume is small
- Speed is slow
The river channel is rough and shallow because there are large stones, rocks and boulders in the river channel. These materials are materials that are weathered or eroded from the side of the valley. The presence of theses material increases the wetted perimeter and thus there would be more friction and the river is slowed down. The volume is small, as there are few tributaries.
- Deep, narrow and steep-sided
- V-shaped valley
River valley is deep, narrow and steeped-sided. It also resemble the letter V. Hence, Upland River valley are described as v-shaped.
