Arctic
In the 1840's, after the disappearance of a 130 man team of explorers led by Sir John Franklin in the Arctic, exploration in the Arctic region began. Noted explorers of this region include Robert Mclure in 1850, who was the first to discover the Northewest Passage through the islands north of Canada. Robert E Peary, an American explorer is credited to be the first to reach the pole in 1909. After the invention of the aeroplane, exploration of the polar regions became less dangerous.
