Biography : Vasco Da Gama

Vasco Da Gama was a sea captain from Portugal who led the first fleet from Europe to India . He commanded for ships around the Cape of Good Hope to India towards the end of the 15th Century. This voyage was responsible for the first sea trade route connecting Asia and Europe.Vasco Da Gama was born in 1469 in Sines, Portugal. As a young man, Vasco learned astronomy and navigation. He bacame a naval Officer in 1492. In 1497, King Manuel the First of Portugal asked Da Gama to find a sea route to India by sailing around Africa. Da Gama’s father had been chosen to lead the expedition, but he died before the plans were completed.


Vasco da Gama is described by chronicles as a man "of medium stature, gentleman's mood, daring for any grand or risky achievement, rough when giving his orders, strong enough to be feared in any dispute, hard worker and inflexible to punish delict on behalf of justice". Thanks to these attributes and to the audacity of his men, a new page was written in the History of the World.
