Australia

The European voyages of Africa began with sea voyages during the 1600's and 1700's. Explorers traversed the interiors in the 1800's. Australia was covered by dry deserts which made traversing it virtually impossible. However, two explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell were able to connect Sydney and Melbourne in 1824. The English explorer Edward John Eyre became the first European to cross the continent from the east to the west. Robert O'Hara and William John Wills succeeded in traversing Australia from north to south.Yet credit remains with James Cook who made the first official sighting of this great continent.
