Rift valley

It is an elongated deep valley with two high blocks at the sides. There are steep fault scarps at its sides. Compression and tension causes the faulting. The faults provide a passage for magma to rise to the surface to form rift volcanoes of basaltic lava in or at the sides of the rift valley.
