Volcanic Predictions

Most volcanic eruptions cannot be accurately predicted. However, when the eruptions are predicted the most volcanologists and seismologists can do is to evacuate the people living near the volcano. This measure can save many lives.

The eruptions are predicted by observing the changes in the volcano's size, changes in the level of ground, changes in the water temperature and colour, the frequency of earthquakes and animal behaviour.

When there is any distinct change in any of these factors, scientists conduct more advanced investigations and may take many precautions and may evacuate people.

A tiltmeter is also used to measure the expansion of a volcano. Seismographs help detect earthquakes, thermometers check temperature changes in the air and gas detectors measure the amount of gas in the air.
