Location

Earthquakes occur most often along plate boundaries where plates converge, diverge or slide past one another. Areas with earthquakes coincide with areas with volcanic activity. 70% of the world's earthquakes occur in the Circum-Pacific Region. 20% of the earthquakes occur in the belt stretching from the Himalayan Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea. The rest of the earthquakes occur in divergent plate boundaries such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
