United States of America

Place:

Trinity Site

Location: North of White Sands Missile Range between the towns Carrizozo and Socorro in New Mexico state.
Date of accident: July 16, 1945
Information on accident: Place where first nuclear device was exploded, but no major accidents have occurred here.

 

Place:

Nevada Test Site

Location: 65 miles (105 km) northwest of Las Vegas in the state of Nevada
Date of accident: several different dates of explosions
Information: Place where thousands of nuclear weapon tests were carried out and so several small accidents occurred but nothing major.

 

Place:

Three Mile Island

Location: Near Middletown in the state of Pennsylvania
Date of accident: March 28, 1979
Information: Worst nuclear disaster before that of Chernobyl and is the United States' worst commercial nuclear disaster. There were no deaths and nobody was injured.

Great Britain

Place:

Sellafield

Location: On the coast of the northwest of England near the town of Seascale.
Date of accident: October, 1957
Information: The graphite moderator in a small reactor (much smaller than that of the the Chernobyl accident) caught fire causing a release of radioactive material.

Japan

Place:

Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Location: Hiroshima is situated on the south of Chugoku Island. Nagasaki is located on the west of Kyushu island.
Date of accident: August 6 and 9, 1945
Information: The first and last nuclear bomb droppings. The 2 bombs were dropped during the Second World War and at the same time ending WWII in Japan. The 2 bombs killed over 240,000 Japanese citizens. The effect these disasters had were life-changing and never since has a nuclear bomb been used.

 

Place:

Tokaimura

Location: 87 miles (140km) north east of Tokyo on the east of the main Island.
Date of accident: September 30, 1999
Information: The most recent nuclear power plant disaster and the worst power plant accident ever in Japan. 35 pounds (77kg) of uranium instead of the usual 5.2 pounds (11.5kg) was put into a purification tank containing nitric acid causing a chain reaction and an large omission of radiation.
