[Dai Pai Dong] Congee
A lot of Chinese start their day with a bowl of congee. It is sort of like a habit to them.
So what exactly is congee?
Congee (also called jook in Cantonese), is a kind of watery rice gruel. It is like a Chinese version of porridge.
Aren't the Chinese bored, eating the same gooey stuff every day?
No they aren't. There are a lot of seasonings and food that can be added to congee. So naturally there are all kinds of congee:
- congee with peanuts, spring onions etc.
- congee with mushrooms
- congee with chicken, beef, pork, fish, salted egg
The meat is usually marinated to give the congee more flavour.
What's in a name?
Believe it or not, the word conge comes from an Indian word 'kanji'. It means 'water in which the rice has been boiled'.
