First
atomic theory
The
notion that all matter consists of fundamental particles called
atoms was first put forward by Greek philosophers Leucippus and
his disciple Democritus, in 5th century BC. They believed that all
matter consisted of tiny particles that could no longer be broken
down. 'Atom' in Greek means indivisible. However, the other Greek
philosophers did not subscribe to these beliefs; instead, they thought
that matter was made up of four elements, air, water, fire and earth.
