Ancient Civilizations

Science & Technology

Our world is extremely advanced today in technological terms. We can cross thousands of miles in a matter of hours by aeroplane; we can communicate with people all over the world in seconds by the internet; we can even leave this earth and reach other planets millions of light years away! Knowledge is what has enabled man to advance, and this knowledge is called Science. With Science, we have technology, with technology, we advance.

No doubt we think we are intelligent beings, but you may be surprised to know that our ancestors were perhaps even smarter than us! Parts of their Science may appear to be stupid to us, but in many other areas and aspects, they have superceded us. Behold the seven wonders of the world, can we ever re-construct them again?

We may not know it but many things today are actually invented by the people of the ancient civilizations. For instance, do you know that the calendar that we use today evolved from the ancient ones that were based on the study of the planets and the stars? It is indeed interesting to know that even though there were no such things as telescopes in the past, the ancient people were actually still able to advance themselves in the field of astronomy!

Other shocking examples of their advancement in science and technology include the invention of the wheel, which as we know, are the four circular 'legs" that are attached to a car that we see on the roads today. Under this theme, we shall therefore look at the following articles on some of the significant contributions the people of the past have made in the field of science and technology, namely:

1. The ancient Calender
2. Invention of the Wheel
3. Numbers and Conunting
4. Ancient Medicine
