Features of a totalitarian state (common for communism and fascism):

  • total control of society; an attempt to dominate all spheres of social life

  • extensive mechanisms of terror by secret services

  • censorship, monopoly for information, centrally steered propaganda

  • ideology - official and obligatory for all

  • lack of legal opposition parties, rules of a mass mono-party

  • clearly defined internal and external enemies

  • a lack of a rule of law (in the sense it exists in democratic countries)

  • radical detachment from the past

  • a new, ideal type of a man; tall, blonde Aryan in the Nazi-Germany, strong worker in communism

  • nihilistic and/or selective approach to traditions
