PHYSICAL SIGNS

  • Unexplained bruises and welts on different parts
    of the body
  • shaped burns that look like the object used - iron, heated wire, cigarette or hot plate; splash and immersion burns which suggest that the child was either thrown with or immersed in hot water

BEHAVIORAL SIGNS

  • Wary of adult contacts, flinched with sudden touch, Uneasy when other children cry, Frightened of parents, Afraid to go home, Display fear and distrust towards parents and adults for no apparent reason

Sexual Abuse

PHYSICAL SIGNS

  • Trauma to the mouth and genitals
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Torn/blood-stained clothing
  • Difficulty in walking and sitting
  • Itchy or swollen genitals
  • Pain when urinating
  • Bruises or bleeding in external genitalia
  • Stomach and pelvic pain
  • Venereal disease

BEHAVIORAL SIGNS

  • Sudden bedweting
  • Frequent nightmares
  • Drastic change in appetite
  • Blank stares
  • Afraid of men
  • Unusual knowledge of sexual act
    and language
  • Seductive behavior
  • poor peer relationship
  • Constant reluctance to go to to a
    particular place or be with a particular person
  • Change in academic performance
  • Suicidal threats and gestures
  • Reluctance to go home
  • Extreme docility or compliance
  • regression

Neglect

PHYSICAL SIGNS

  • Looks hungry, tired, and weak; pale; underweight;
  • untidy and may have skin diseases
    like rashes and scabies
  • Lack of supervision specially in
    dangerous activities for long periods
  • Unattended medical needs

BEHAVIORAL SIGNS

  • Begging or stealing
  • Over withdrawn or over-agressive
  • not able to relate to other people
  • extends stay in school
  • lacks interest in studies
  • alcohol or drug use
