DENIZENS OF THE DEEP SEA

LIONFISH

This colored lionfish is very prominent among the coral reef habitat.

It is 18 long with spines containing venom which wards away predators.   It may even launch a preemptive attack.

Its spines contain a potent neuromuscular venom.  When speared, the venom cause intense pain and swelling, lasting for several hours.   Secondary infection of the wound is common.    In rare cases, paralysis, shock and death may follow.
