Camouflage/Warning

The main rule which applies to life in the animal kingdom is 'eat and be eaten'. All animals have their own strategie to survive this battle, in other words, not be eaten! This is also true of phasmids. to this end, they utilise one of the two following possiblities:

1. The phasmids are able to hide themselves, to make themselves 'invisible'. In a zoo, many visiters don't see the carefully hidden reptiles, amphibians and insects in the terranium. It takes a bit of time and effort to be able to make out thes animals. This is known as camouflage.

2. The insects are coloured in such a way that says they are poisonous or unpleasant. A wasp for example is so coloured. We call this warning.

When animals are threatened in spite of the warning, they defend themselves.
