Ptolemy I allied with Alexander the Great. When Alexander died, General Ptolemy resumed power over Egypt. This resulted in a long line of Ptolemys in power as rulers of Egypt. The family followed the Egyptian custom of marrying within the family even though they were of Greek heritage. They also followed the tradition of only using a small amount of names. The Cleopatra in our play is Cleopatra VII. She is highlighted in red; her children are in blue and the names that form the direct line of descendants in fuchsia.
