Quantum leaps

Since the olympic games of Los Angeles 1932 timekeeping went through an enormous development. The quantum leaps were carried out however all in the middle of the passed century. Important technological innovations were the change of timekeeping to a hundredths of a seconds (Helsinki 1952), quartz-supported by the manual for fully automatic time measurement (Mexico city 1968) the use of photo-electronic cells for entering one after the other incoming runner (St. Moritz 1968), as well as the finishing photography (London 1948) in the expert jargon photo finish called.

In the years before Los Angeles 1932 time measurement belonged to the functions of the combat judges those the times on their own clocks stopped. At that time for the first times a private enterprise had been assigned official timekeeping for Olympic games. The enterprise was represented with 80 stop watches, a watchmaker and the Chronograph caliber 1130. This permitted a timekeeping accuracy of a tenth of a second, a measure, which applied to all kinds of sport

At the threshold of the third millenium the claim to the timekeeping rose enormously. New for Sydney they will use transponders for wheel and run disciplines as well as GPS- supported systems for the sail disciplines.
