Why fog lights are orange?

Scattering also helps us in every day life.  Driving a car can become very difficult under certain weather conditions which impair vision.  One of these weather conditions, is fog*.  The high beams in a car do not work well in fog because the Light reflects off the water particles and back to you.  Using the concept of scattering, fog Lights have been developed to deal with this situation.  We know that the Light in frequencies closer to the Ultraviolet part of the spectrum will scatter more widely.  In fog, we need a Light which will be able to penetrate through the water particles.  Only the longer wavelengths will be able to penetrate through the particles.  fog Lights employ an orange beam of Light (one of the longer wavelengths) to penetrate through the particles.  Red Light is not used because red does not illuminate well enough to serve as a Light to see by.
