There are many different kinds of symptoms which may indicate heart disease. These symptoms, however, may be caused by other health problems, some of which are trivial. So, none of these symptoms necessarily indicate that there is something wrong with the heart, but you should see a doctor if any of these conditions persist.
Dizziness can be defined by a few seconds during which you feel unsteady and light headed. Most of these attacks are harmless. If you feel dizzy often and on a daily basis it could be as a result of a heart problem. Problems such as impaired blood flow to the brain or even heart block can cause dizziness.
Fainting is defined as a temporary loss of consciousness due as a result of a lack of blood supply to the brain. Standing for long periods of time, especially on a hot and stuffy day can cause a fainting attack. Extreme pain or sudden shock can cause fainting because of overstimulation of the vagus nerve. Most of these cases are natural and are not serious health risks, but on occasion fainting can be caused by heart block or transient ischemic attack. If you faint during exercise you should contact your doctor immediately.
Breathlessness as a result of strenuous exercise is normal and should not be reason for alarm. However, breathlessness during rest or non-strenuous activity may be as a result of heart problems. Heart failure is a common cause of breathlessness.
Swollen ankles are often a symptom of heart failure. The heart cannot provide enough pressure to keep the blood moving through the circulatory system and the blood collects in the ankles as a result of gravity.
