LINEAR

Discovered in September of 1999, comet LINEAR was to be seen with naked eye. Its name comes from the Lincoln Laboratory Near Earth Asteroid Research Project, which discovered and named the comet. There was still hope to see the comet without a telescope after the first part broke away July 7th, but all hope was lost when it broke up right before it's maximum visibility.
