Among the various items that have been known to fall from the sky are corn, peas, nuts,
seeds, and fruit. In 1951, workers on top of New York’s Empire State Building had to stop
work and seek shelter from a painful hail of barley grain. Thousands of peas pelted down
in Tonna, South Wales in April 1980. In March 1977, a couple from Bristol, England were
homeward bound from church when they discovered themselves the victims of a hazelnut
shower. They didn’t believe that strong wind was the cause, however, because the sky at
the time had been clear and the wind calm before it began. Besides, hazelnuts are not
typically found in March. In November 1984, another couple were awakened by loud noises
on their East Crescent, England, home. At first they thought they were giant hailstones,
but on closer observation, they were perceived to be apples (and they were apples of the
best sort). The apples continued to shower down for another hour.
