Welcome to the Help Section! Here you can learn how to navigate through our site. Forces of Nature is made up of a general information hub, from which you can enter separate, connected information sections that focus on an individual natural disaster.

The general information hub contains common knowledge regarding what natural disasters are and how they impact you. The information sections are almost like independent sites within themselves, featuring specific articles on specific disasters or phenomena.

Users can access all this information using either the navigation bar on the left hand side of each page, or the links that are spelled out at the bottom. The content within the site is generally separated into five categories: info, reality, interact, general, and forces.

The Info category will always contain articles and text regarding the subject at hand. For instance, if the user is currently browsing through the Volcano section, the Info button will provide access to articles regarding what a volcano is, what kinds of volcanoes there are, what types of eruptions occur, etc. If the user is currently browsing through the Avalanche section, however, the Info button provides access to articles regarding what an avalanche is, what types of snow slides occur, etc.

The Reality category, which focuses on the reality of natural disasters occurring around the world, contains the following links. The content within these links will change accordingly as users browse from one type of disaster or phenomena to another.

  • current events: provides the latest occurring disasters around the world; users can also add updates for disasters that we have not included
  • case studies: provides a historical account of past events (eruptions, slides, storms, etc.)
  • worst disasters: a top 10 list of worst disasters in history
  • real life stories: an opportunity for users to provide their personal stories and experiences
  • interviews: interviews with specialists, individuals, and scientists
  • quotations: find some quotes on disasters

The Interact category provides links to the following interactive multimedia. Again, the content within changes accordingly as users browse from one disaster section to another:

  • multimedia: find our image gallery, sound clips, and other multimedia
  • simulations: try our new simulations of how certain disasters occur
  • classroom: a learning center specifically designed for teachers to incorporate our website’s content into the classroom
  • activities: find exciting experiments, games, and other fun activities
  • quizzes: take our quizzes and see if you can meet the disaster challenge!
  • message board: add a message to other users
  • resources: a list of recommended books, movies, and other resources

The General category provides unchanging links to the following areas:

  • about: learn about the team that created Forces of Nature
  • win our award: apply for the Forces of Nature web award, designed to recognize other informative, interactive natural disaster websites
  • awards we’ve won: look at the list of web awards that our site has won
  • guestbook: sign our guestbook and leave some comments!
  • help: learn how to navigate our site (if you’re reading this, you are already in this section)
  • contact us: e-mail us
  • sitemap: look at a map of the pages within our site

The Forces category provides a list of the different phenomena featured within our site:

  • phenomena: interesting natural phenomena that occur on earth, including aurora borealis, coronas, rainbows, and many more that you may never have heard of!

In addition, at the very top right-hand corner, you will find links to different-language versions of our website. Please click on the language of your choice.

On certain pages, you may also see a link that says [Format this Page for Printing]. This will take you to a text-only version of the page.
