December 28, 1989, started like any normal day. I was six years old, and my younger sister and I were watching television. Suddenly at 10:27 am, the entire house began to shake; china ornaments fell from cabinets and smashed on the floor, and a large mirror hanging on the wall came crashing down and narrowly missed my baby sister. I had no idea what was happening; nobody had ever thought that an earthquake would hit Newcastle, Australia.

This experience taught me how important it is to be prepared, as natural disasters can occur at any time and place. Although the earthquake in Newcastle was only 5.6 on the Richter scale, small compared to some of the larger earthquakes which occur in many other countries, it had lasting consequences for the residents of the city. Since the earthquake, building codes have been changed so that Newcastle will be better prepared when the next quake hits. Its citizens are also more aware of how they should act both during and after the earthquake.

Hi, my name is Emily and I am currently in Year 12 at Merewether High School in Newcastle, Australia. This is my first year participating in the ThinkQuest Internet Challenge, and working on the Forces of Nature website has been a great experience. Thanks to my fellow team members for all their hard work - Mohamed, who has amazing skills in developing interactive applications, and Helen, who works harder than any person I have ever known! Thank you also to our coaches who have encouraged and supported our team.

I am interested in computers, so it was great to be able to put my skills to use in collaborating with Helen and Mohamed on this website. It has been fascinating to learn about the forces of nature, and the influence that they have over human lives. I hope you enjoy visiting our website as much as we enjoyed creating it!
