Historically, droughts are perhaps what led to land-dwelling creatures. Billions of years ago, the oceans covered the earth and most life was found in the ocean. About 0.5 billion years ago, an ancient drought occurred, depositing some organisms on land. These creatures adjusted to life on land, and passed this trait onto future generations. However, life cannot survive without water. To adapt to life on solid ground, they were forced to carry water in the form of internal fluids. Droughts are made more severe by the fact that we need access to water at all times in order to stay alive.

So perhaps droughts are a good thing (in a sense). They led to human development and gradual biological change. Read on to see what droughts are all about.
