Below are definitions of important drought terms.
- dendrochronology: the science of studying tree rings
- drought: a period when it rains less often than usual; in temperate regions, 15 consecutive days with less than 0.01 inch of rain
- famine: a severe shortage of food, often brought on by drought
- sunspots: dark, relatively cool areas on the surface of the sun
