Avalanches closed the highway linking Kenai Peninsula with the rest of Alaska, leaving 2,000 people stranded. It is unknown when the highway will reopen. The avalanches were caused by heavy snowfall and rising temperatures. They were the state’s worst avalanches in decades, leaving thousands of residents stranded without power. One person was killed, prompting the governor to declare it a disaster emergency site.
CONCORD, New Hampshire (February 21, 2000 Monday ) (added on 7/19/2000)
An avalanche killed a skier on Mount Washington in New England around 1 p.m. The victim and his friend caused the slide when they climbed up a gully, known as the “Gulf of Slides,” in order to ski down it. They were swept into the gully. The survivor was buried waist deep, but the other perished when he was buried face down in the snow.
